According to a study done on college students, loneliness can impair the immune system. Social support has been shown elsewhere to be beneficial to one's overall health, but this particular study indicates that it's not only about having friends but about how a person feels.

Feeling lonely despite having many friends still negatively affects the immune system. On the flipside, being physically alone yet not having feelings of loneliness doesn't seem to hamper the immune system.
