|
Large long-term studies which finally compare different drugs used to treat depression, as well as drugs used to treat schizophrenia, are nearing an end now. These studies consists of thousands of participants that have been followed for years in 'real world' conditions.
The studies will hopefully answer many unanswered questions, giving the mental health industry more reliable information from which to treat their patients.
As of right now, psychiatrist generally pick and choose among medications to treat depression, without having hard data to help them choose the appropriate medications. Another thing the studies may answer is the question "If patient X doesn't respond to treatment A, which medication or therapy should be the next step"
